STRONG Or soft ?

When is it okay to be soft? When can you be strong? The answer to these questions depends initially on the kid. Every kid is  different and handles discipline differently.  Secondly, it depends on the situation. The punishment must fit the crime. If your child has completely disregarded the law and drank underage, the punishment would be different versus not making their bed in the morning. That’s why you need to handle all situations and children differently.

Some kids need a softer approach. My middle child is like this. She can sometimes be shy and quiet until she gets to know you. She doesn’t like talking to people she doesn’t know. Kids that need a “softer approach” usually like their mom better because she is usually the one who is the “softest” parent. Now, who is left? Of course, the dad, who is mostly harder on kids. Many kids say they are afraid of their dads. Which kids need a stronger approach? Lets be honest- the hard-headed ones. These are the kids that test the limits of their parents’ patience in every situation. When there is a need for quiet, they are the loudest. When there is a need for restraint, they charge ahead. My husband takes over with the children of mine that tend toward being less even-tempered.

Now, what situations call for different approaches? Say your child gets a bad grade on a report card.  You would need to be both; not too hard and not too soft. You would need to fix the problem (bring grades up) but not be to harsh. This could crush your child’s spirit. So, what if your child spilled something on the the carpet? This is definitely one of those times where you should be softer on the child. When should you be harder? Say your child continually does something that you told them not to, then that is when you should be harder.

So, children are different and so are the situations, but the way you handle them can change everything. How can it change? It can change so that your child actually learns when they do something wrong. It will lead to a better behaving child.

Charmin also knows how to be soft & strong..
