Kroger Coupon Policy Change

Ok…..I have heard from a couple readers that Kroger will no longer accept coupons on items that are reduced “Managers special”, so I decided to go today and test this out for myself!

I bought the Voskos Greek Yogurt, that is pictured above, on manager’s special for $.93. The coupon was for $.75 off. The register beeped when the cashier tried to scan the coupon. She told me that the coupon wouldn’t work because the item would end up being below what Kroger paid for the item! What???!!!! Are you kidding me???!!!! Ok, I told her that I have never heard of that policy and she said it was because “new cashiers” don’t know that!! Well, I realized that I was dealing with a cashier that had no idea what she was talking about, so I politely paid, (yet fuming on the inside), and then proceeded over to customer service. I asked the lady at customer service if there policy is not to allow coupons on Manager’s specials and she said that they are not allowed to take coupons on manager’s specials!!!!

This makes absolutely no sense to me! Isn’t the reason behind items going on “manager’s special”, is so that they can get rid of it before it expires??

Well after I got home, I decided to call corporate at (513)762-4000. I spoke with a lady named Ellen. She confirmed what the cashier and customer service manager told me earlier! Their policy is to not allow coupons on Manager specials! Now she said the reason is because the item is already greatly reduced! And???!!!!!  My point to her was that they would get reimbursed for the manufacturers coupon. She tried to tell me that, they do not always get reimbursed for the coupon or the full value of the coupon. Well then how come on the back of the coupon it says: “Retailer: Sun Valley Dairy will reimburse you the face value of the coupon plus 8 cents handling for coupons redeemed in accordance with this offer.” Wow!! They are actually paying Kroger for the face value PLUS 8 cents!!!!

I went back and forth with Ellen, and she just kept saying that it was there policy and that they are “cracking down” on coupon fraud. I have no idea what my complaint and this coupon policy had to do with fraud but I definately will be taking my business elsewhere. I told her that I got the same Greek Yogurt a couple weeks ago at Publix for FREE and she told me ” yes, Publix is much more lenient with their coupon policy”…..hmmmm, don’t know why I have been spending my money at Kroger when even the people at Kroger Corporate are telling me that Publix is much more lenient with coupons. I won’t make that mistake again!

I even tried to get her to explain to me why I could come in and buy something on sale and use a coupon and get it the product for FREE but  couldn’t use a coupon on a product that was marked “manager’s special” and pay $.18???

With the coupon changes at Kroger, I am finding I can get things cheaper or equal price at Publix, Bi-Lo, or Food Lion without the hassle of digital coupons and all the other coupon rules. Are you finding deals other places than Kroger? Are you having the same problems as me? Let me know!!!

  1. Yet another reason I no longer shop at Kroger. Check out the group "Kroger Couponers" on FB...you'll see what everyone is talking about! Off to Publix and Walmart I go!
  2. I use to shop at Kroger all the time until they started coming down on couponers! I mostly shop at Publix now and they are way better! I hardly ever have issues and if I do, they don't look at me as if I'm doing "coupon fraud". Just take your business elsewhere!! :)
  3. Thanks for posting about this. If you look at my last post about shopping at Kroger during the last day of double/triples you'll see they tried to pull this on me too. Kroger is loosing roughly $80/week from me OUT OF POCKET from discontinuing double/triples and using coupons on clearanced items, all in the so-called name of bringing a program that's more universal. They really haven't run the numbers well, have they? They double in the amount of about $20/month for me. They give me $0.10/gallon two to three times a month, in the amount of $2.60-$3.90/month. So, they'd rather loose $320+/month of my family's money to save themselves $23.90? Doesn't make much sense, does it? That's NOT including the $0.08 handling per coupon PLUS the $5 or so bonus per 100 coupons they receive (I recently learned about that). Way to go, Kroger! (/sarcasm)

I don't really get mad....I just take my money somewhere else that will treat me better. If you live in an area with more stores to choose from...only USE Kroger to your advantage and go in there ONLY for their rare deals....like the mega sale on veggies that were .26 a while back. I bought 30. This is how I treat Walmart too. They offer NO loyal customer perks, so I just go in there when I can get something for free with coupons (like 10 boxes of Kleenex with my 10 $1 coupons.) And I can TELL this drives the cashiers nuts! Everything I do is legal and honest....and when they start feeding my 4 kids....then they can judge what I do.
    • I"m usually pretty good at staying cool and not getting mad, but when stores change their coupon policy without letting us know, and then try to act like we are committing "coupon fraud", I get very irritated! I don't think they have thought out the reasoning behind what they are doing and in the end will cause many couponer's to go elsewhere.
    • I only go in Kroger during their "10 for $10" sales and for things that are on sale that beats Walmart. I've been having good luck on cleaning supplies at Dollar General. Their website offers a coupon that takes $5.00 off of $25.00 in merchandise on Saturdays. ***Note: that is $25 AFTER coupons come off. You have to plan ahead and have a good game plan. Some of their prices even beat Walmart.
  5. I stopped shopping there a couple of month ago do to the coupon policy, i was fuming when they won't match my coupons with my ecoupon. Its ok meijer loves my business. I just found your blog and i love it thanks

Does anyone know if people are emailing/calling/writing Kroger about this????????? They have been my favorite store for so long because it is there that I can feed my family even on a very low teacher's salary. But now - I just don't know what I am going to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CORPORATE - IF YOU ARE READING AND LISTENING - PLEASE HEAR US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The amount that YOU WILL BE LOSING when we take our business elsewhere is FAR MORE than ANY amount you may lose when we coupon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • The thing is, Kroger does not lose money when we coupon! They get reimbursed for all those manufacturer coupons!
  7. just found your website while google'ing this exact problem. ive been shopping at kroger for seven years now, every single week, spending atleast $125 a week for my family of 4. two months ago i discovered couponing and was really upset inside today when i wasnt able to buy a manager's special and use my coupon. i had noticed the past two times i shopped there and was using Qs on manager's specials that the register beeped but the cashier just looked at the items and overrode the beep. wasnt sure at that time what was going on. now i know!! that really sucks. i love kroger and their manager's specials, esp on organic items. guess ill be spending my money at publix! thanks for addressing this issue!!
  8. The loss of customers that are standing in line to wait for you to save your cents is not worth it, and I seriously, as a customer cant stand coupon users....if you want to use them....then check your self out and get out of the way for people that have beter use of their time, then trying to get everything for free, if grocers were smart they would have seprate checkout lines for coupon users as no body wants to wait in line as they go through their endless book of coupons.........move out the way =)
