10 tips for keeping your family safe on the road
1. Before heading out, check out your car and make sure it’s in great driving condition. Check tire pressure, oil and water levels and lights! Make sure you have a spare tire! Fix anything before you leave so your not stranded!
2. Seatbelt- Alway’s wear your seatbelt! Not only has this safety device been proven to save lives, but you can also get fined in many states if you don’t wear it.
3. Emergency Equipment- Make sure you check to see if your vehicle is equipped with a first aid/emergency kit. If not, put one together and stow it. You never know how handy this can be in an emergency situation.
4. Brakes- Make sure to have your brakes checked out before you leave. Especially if you are planning to tow something like a camper or boat.
5. Car Seats- Always’s make sure that the car seats are the proper size for your child’s age! If you are not sure if it’s installed correctly or the right size, take it to the fire department and they can help you!
6. Obey the three-second rule- This rule says you should stay three seconds away from the car in front of you, avoiding tailgating and leaving plenty of room to stop if the person in front of you suddenly slams on the brakes. The way to tell how many seconds you’re behind, start counting when the car ahead of you passes an easily identifiable landmark (like a bridge or mile maker) and continue counting until you pass this same landmark. If you’ve counted less than three seconds in between the two of you passing this same spot, you need to slow down and allow more space.
7. Obey the speed limit- This will not only reduce the risk of getting a ticket but it will give you more reaction time if an unsafe driver decides to switch lanes without notice.
8. As obvious as it is to many drivers not to drink and drive, many people still do other things that cause them to be distracted while driving. Some of these are not illegal but they are just as bad like eating, talking on the phone or texting. Avoid doing these activities while driving, since they take your focus off the road, and cause delayed reaction time.
9. Don’t leave children or pets in car. Also make sure to have a auto safety harness for your pet!
10.Make sure your windshield is clean! If your windshield or other windows are dirty or even fogged, your vision can quickly be impaired.Clean your windows at every fill up. Many gas stations have windshield wash stations available so take advantage of them. If your windshield has scratches or cracks get it replaced! A reputable company like Safelite Auto Glass can fix damages to your windshield. A chip could turn into a crack at any time, often when you are least expecting it. Windshield repair is often a safe and economical alternative to a full windshield replacement.
